  • Violence Research Data: 2nd Edition

74 collections. ASCII-format data, Portable Document Format (PDF) documentation, Adobe Acrobat Reader software, SAS and SPSS data definition statements, data collection instrument, user guide. [CD0014] [ICPSR 6728] Issued October 1996. This CD-ROM is currently being processed and will be available shortly from the Multimedia Resources Center, Main Library, University of California, Irvine.

The CD-ROM contains data from 74 studies or data compilations about violence. These studies encompass a wide range of variation on such characteristics as original purpose of the study, nature of focal offenses, extent of criminal history information and victim characteristics, and unit of analysis. The focal offenses include homicide, assault, robbery, domestic violence, and sexual aggression; some studies also contain other offenses for comparison purposes. The studies span a wide array of units of analysis, including events, individuals, families, age groups, and cities or counties.

The datasets on the CD-ROM can be grouped into ten arbitrarily defined categories in order to better comprehend the range of research and data represented. These categories are: violence (general); youth violence; domestic violence; homicide; other specific offenses; violence in criminal careers; violence and mental disorder; victims of violence; violence and criminal justice agencies,; and capital punishment.

The first category, violence (general), is really a catch-all category for studies that couldn't be forced into another category. In this category are historical data on violence in the United States by Monkkonen and cross-national historical data compiled by Archer and Gartner. There are four studies focusing on violent crimes committed by incarcerated felons while they were active offenders in the community (Peterson et al.; Wright and Rossi; Horney and Marshall; and Gottfredson and Gottfredson). There are two time series studies of national arrest or crime rates (Greenberg; Cohen and Rosenfeld); two studies of street gang violence or interventions (Klein et al.; and the Los Angeles DA's Office); and Widom's renowned study of the links between child abuse and later violent behavior.

The second category, youth violence, contains some classic studies about juvenile delinquency in which violent offenses are a subset of many offenses. Wolfgang's two Philadelphia birth cohort studies (the 1945 and 1958 cohorts) are on the CD-ROM, as are Shannon's Racine cohorts, Farrington's London cohort, and Elliott's national panel sample of youth. Each of these studies (except Wolfgang's 1945 cohort) also contains follow-up data about later adult crime, but they are arguably grouped in the youth violence category since the main focus of the original study was delinquency, not criminal careers. Other studies in this category are two BJS data sets pertaining to youth (the 1989 school crime supplement to the National Crime Survey and the 1987 Survey of Youths in Custody); two studies dealing with high-risk youth (Haapanen and Jesness; Dembo); and one study evaluating the deterrence of youth violence (Singer).

Studies in the category of domestic violence also represent some classic studies about this topic. Straus and Gelles' national surveys (1976, 1985) of physical violence in American families are on the CD-ROM as are Berk and Sherman's original study of the deterrent effects of arrest for domestic assault in Minneapolis and the six domestic violence intervention replications (Pate et al.--Dade County, FL; Hirschel et al.--Charlotte, NC; Dunford et al.-- Omaha, NE; Edleson and Syers--Minneapolis, MN; Sherman--Milwaukee, WI; and Black et al.--Colorado Springs, CO). Rounding out this category is the Blane et al. study of substance abuse and domestic violence in Buffalo, NY.

The homicide category contains a number of important datasets, including two newly compiled datasets released here for the first time. Fox has updated and created new hierarchical datasets from the Uniform Crime Reports Supplementary Homicide Reports containing incident, victim, and offender data on all reported U.S. homicides from 1976-1994. The Blocks and staff have updated all homicide case file data in Chicago from 1965-1994 with new information including community area designations. Other studies in the homicide group are two studies by Reidel and Zahn using Supplementary Homicide Reports and additional data; a historical study of ethnicity and homicide in California by McKanna; a study of homicide investigations and apprehensions by Keppel and Weis; and a BJS study combining UCR data and NJRP data focusing on disposition of murder cases in 33 large urban counties.

Three datasets about rape--the rape incident subset of National Crime Survey victimization data 1987-1991, the National Crime Victimization Survey data, 1992-1994, and Prentky's study of the classification of rapists--and Zimring's study of robberies in Chicago comprise the category of "other specific offenses" in addition to homicide.

The category of violence in criminal careers has three studies by Blumstein and Cohen using UCR arrest data from Michigan and New York; a BJS study of the recidivism of felons on probation; and Laub and Sampson's criminal career research using the Glueck's original sample and follow-up data. Each of these studies again was not about violence per se but includes violent offenses in the measurement of crime.

Two studies about violence and mental disorder collected data in New York State. Toch and Adams studied mentally disturbed violent offenders and Steadman et al. studied mental disorder and violent crime in cohorts of hospitalized mentally ill and prison inmate populations.

Five studies provide data on victims of violence or the justice system responses (in addition to the rape incident subset of the NCS noted above). The newly revised National Crime Victimization Survey, 1992-1994 provides information about victims of violence and characteristics of violent victimizations in an incident-level extract file. Other new victim studies include a study of hospital assistance to victims of violent crimes and the cost of mental health care for victims of violent crimes. Hernon and Forst studied responses to victim harm and Stillman studied concerns of the relatives and friends of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty from 1982-1986. Skogan et al. studied victims needs and victim services in four U.S. localities. It should be remembered that a large amount of victim data is also available on the BJS CD-ROM entitled "Crime Victimization Data, 1973-1991," ICPSR CD0007, (available for $15 from NCJRS as item # NCJ-143959 or through an ICPSR Official Representative at a member institution).

New on the second edition of the CD-ROM is a category of studies about violence by or directed at law enforcement or corrections officers. This category includes two recent studies on police use of force and a third study on the role of psychology in controlling excessive force. The final category of studies, capital punishment, contains two datasets: one by BJS on capital sentences; the other published by ICPSR on executions in the U.S. 1608-1991 compiled by M. Watt Espy and colleagues.

An ACCESS database allows the material to be viewed in various user-defined ways. Free-text searches of all the questions used in all the surveys can be made, or hierarchical pathways may be followed to view particular sets of questions, tables of time-series, or marginal frequencies for all variables listed. There are also graphs or charts for all key variables. SPSS frequencies can be viewed and help is given on designing searches. A bibliography of publications based upon these data is provided.

BESIS is available from the Archive at £50 plus VAT and may be freely used for non-commercial purposes on condition only that any works which make use of the materials acknowledge the source of the material and declare that those who carried out the original analysis and collection of the data bear no responsibility for its further analysis and interpretation.

    Technical details:
BESIS runs under both Microsoft Windows 3.1 (and 3.11), and Windows 95 (and NT). Users with Microsoft Access may run BESIS direct from the CD-ROM. The run-time versions require a minimum of 30Mb hard disk space. A minimum of 8Mb RAM is recommended for the Windows 3.1 version, 12Mb for the Windows 95/NT version.

U.S. Census: Public Use Micro Samples (PUMS)

A collection of U.S. census data from 1850 to 1990 along with programs to manipulate the data, namely, the Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) files and IPUMS (Integrated Public Use Microdata Samples). These data are based on individual returns rather than summary data and allow researchers to construct an almost limitless number of cross tabulations. The software used is MicroAnalyst from Querylogic. Check out its Research Links page for articles about PUMS.

At UC Irvine, these datasets do not circulate; usage is limited to UCI students, faculty and staff. The datasets, with MicroAnalyst software, are for use at a workstation at the UCI Main Library's Multimedia Resources Center (MRC). Datasets comprise:

    1850-1970 IPUMS modules
    1980 and 1990 1% metro PUMS modules
    1980 5% state PUMS module
    1990 5% state PUMS module.

The call number for the series at the MRC is: HA181 .M53 2000. There is also a printed manual.

For other, largely publicly accessible census data on CD-ROM, check this listing of census "computer files" on: ANTPAC, the online catalog. You can also enquire at the UCI Main Library Reference Desk for assistance on what other census CD-ROMs are available.
