About the Social Science Data Archives

The Social Science Data Archives at the University of California, Irvine, Libraries collects and disseminates, for academic research and instructional use, machine-readable data in a variety of formats. These formats include CD-ROMs and floppy disks. Data can also be accessed and downloaded via the Web. The studies are acquired from a variety of sources, including the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), governmental agencies (including federal and state), and such research organizations as the Field Institute (for the California Poll).

We also have mounted on our Web site two collections, one spanning over two decades, of public opinion data. These are the Orange County Surveys and the Pacific Poll. Both collections provide documentation and data with an online Data Analysis System using the Survey Documentation & Analysis software from UC Berkeley.

The machine-readable data files collection includes studies spanning many disciplines, including political science, economics, management, demography, criminal justice, sociology, environmental sciences, and health sciences. The availability of these studies, including longitudinal survey data collected elsewhere, permits UCI researchers to conduct secondary analyses on these data, thus contributing to scientific knowledge.

Codebooks and/or data maps for studies may be available in a variety of formats. Printed codebooks for ICPSR studies, where available, are shelved in the Main Library Third Floor stacks under Call Numbers H62 I277, and arranged by study number. Electronic versions of the codebooks are freely available for downloading from the ICPSR Data Archive Web-site: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/archive1.html.

Occasionally, SPSS or SAS control statements are also available for a study. If so, these are listed in the file level information for the study.

UCI's institutional membership in the ICPSR permits UCI users access to the entire ICPSR collection directly from ICPSR.

The Library's collection of data on circulating floppy disks and CD-ROMs is available for checkout at the Multimedia Resources Center, 1st floor, Main Library.

We have also created an Archives Data Page where selected datasets are mounted for easy downloading using a Web browser, with access restricted to University of California, Irvine, students, faculty and staff. You can reach the data page from the Social Science Data Archives main menu.
