IMMIGRATION
AND RACE ISSUE
Most Orange County residents feel that immigrants are
a benefit to California today, rather than a burden. The results are
similar to the PPIC Statewide Survey in January 2000. Democrats (61%)
and independent voters (58%) have mostly positive views of immigrants,
while Republicans are more divided on the benefits and costs of immigration
(49% to 40%). Three in four Latinos see immigrants as a benefit, compared
with half of non-Hispanic whites.
On the issue of "racial profiling" by the
police, nearly half of Orange County residents believe this practice
is widespread in the region. This is similar to the PPIC Statewide Survey
in February 2000. Most Democrats and Latinos feel that racial profiling
is widespread in the region, while many Republicans and non-Hispanic
whites believe it is not.

closer to your views: Immigrants today are a benefit to
California because of their hard work, or immigrants today are a
burden to California because they use public services.”
