GUN
CONTROL
Orange County residents' support for gun controls is
also at odds with the region's conservative reputation. Two in three
residents agree with the statement "the government does not do
enough to regulate access to guns." Only one in three think "the
government goes too far in restricting the rights of citizens to own
guns." The results are similar to the PPIC Statewide Survey in
January 2000 and a national survey by the Wall Street Journal/NBC News
in 1999. Democrats (70%) and independent voters (67%) solidly support
increased gun regulations. A majority of Republicans (52%) also want
tighter gun controls, although many (44%) do feel the government goes
too far in restricting gun-owners' rights. Women favor increased gun
regulations more than do men (68% to 59%). Latinos are more likely than
non-Hispanic whites (72% to 60%) to believe that the government does
not do enough to regulate access to guns.

“Which of these is
closer to your views: The government goes too far in restricting
the rights of citizens to own guns, or the government does not
do enough to regulate access to guns.”
