GAY
RIGHTS
In another indication that Orange County does not follow
the socially conservative platform, most residents support allowing
gay men and women to serve openly in the military. Sixty-two percent
say that gays and lesbians should serve openly in the military, while
28% say they should not. These local trends are similar to the PPIC
Statewide Survey of Californians in February 2000 and a national survey
by Fox News in 2000. Democrats (77%) and independent voters (69%) strongly
favor having gays serve openly in the military, and a narrow majority
of Republicans also give their support. Support is stronger among women
(69%) than men (56%). There are no significant differences between Latinos
and non-Hispanic whites.
