ABORTION
On specific issues, Orange County does not fit the profile
of social conservatism. Most residents (65%) believe that "government
should not interfere with a woman's access to abortion," while
fewer than three in 10 want more restrictions on abortion. Local opinions
on abortion are similar to the results of a PPIC Statewide Survey of
Californians in January 2000, and a nationwide Wall Street Journal/NBC
News survey in 1999. Democrats (74%) and independent voters (73%) are
more likely than Republicans (65%) to hold the view that the government
should not interfere with access to abortion. Latinos are twice as likely
as non-Hispanic whites (49% to 24%) to say that the government should
pass more laws restricting abortion. In fact, Latinos are evenly divided
between thinking more restrictions are needed and believing that the
government should not interfere with access to abortion.
