AND POLITICAL LIFE: CIVIC INVOLVEMENT How do Orange County residents spend their time? Three in four say they are very involved in keeping up their homes and taking care of their families, two in three are very busy making a living and earning money, and one in three is highly engaged in spending time with friends. Civic and religious pursuits pale in comparison. Fewer than one in four is highly involved in religious activities and about one in six describes themself as being similarly engaged in volunteer work. Very few Orange County residents say they are highly involved in working on local issues, political activities, or state and national issues. In all, more than half say they are not really involved in state and national issues (72%), political activities (70%), or local issues (54%). Large numbers are also not involved in volunteer or charity work (45%), and religious or spiritual activities (39%). Orange County residents are similar to the rest of the nation, with one important exceptionfewer here are highly involved in religious activities (23% to 33%). Latinos and non-Hispanic whites place a similar high priority on family and work. Non-Hispanic whites are more likely than Latinos to be very involved with friends (42% to 28%), religious activities (25% to 14%), and volunteer work (21% to 8%). In fact, large numbers of Latinos report not being involved with friends (32%), religious activities (37%), or volunteer work (63%). Few in either group are highly immersed in politics or local, state and national issues.
